SideShow Bennie
Side Show Bennie
SideShow
Bennie has been part of the modern side show revival for
nearly 15 years and has a legion of fans from border to
border and coast to coast. His pain threshold is legendary
and his wit is bountiful and those two attributes combine to
make SideShow Bennie an entertainment extravaganza without
peer.
Bennie learned his craft from many sources and had many
teachers. He spent years learning the amazing feats and
creating his remarkable show. SideShow Bennie's act is an
intense physical experience. He does things with and to his
body that the rational mind tells one they should not do.
However, his act is filled with comedy and the entire
performance is done with a good natured wink, letting the
audience know that it is all in fun. Yes, the acts are very
real and very dangerous and should not be attempted by
anyone, and yet, Bennie makes them fun and entertaining.
After working as a solo performer for almost 10 years,
Bennie recently added a partner to his act. The lovely and
vivacious
has become a
valuable asset to the act and very welcome addition to the
show. Anna is no mere 'lovely assistant' but a talented
performer in her own right. She brings a fresh energy to the
show and has quickly become an audience favorite

Interview
LargeInCharge.com: What
is your name (Real and name used for Artistic Expression)?
My name is
Benjamin Wade and I perform professionally under the name, SideShow
Bennie.
LargeInCharge.com: Where are you originally from and where is your
home now?
I was born in
Muskegon, Michigan and moved with my parents to Nashville, Tennessee
when I was three years old and have, more or less, been there ever
since.
LargeInCharge.com: Are you want most would consider a person of
size?
I am 6' tall and
weigh over 300 lbs so I would say, yes, most consider me a person of
size.
LargeInCharge.com: Have you always been a person of size, or did you
grow with time?
Yes, I was
always the biggest kid in my class at school. I will not say that I
have 'struggled' with my weight my whole life because it hasn't been
a struggle at all. I have always enjoyed being 'full figured' and my
size was just a small part of who I am as a person.
LargeInCharge.com: Your performances are unique though very well
known, Please tell us what you do?
My act is an
updated version of a classic American side show. In the old days
(from the turn of the 20th century through WWII) a touring side show
was called a 10 in 1 because you would have 10 people, each doing a
unique act, in one show. I am a one man 10 in 1. I do fire eating,
Bed Of Nails, The Himan Blockhead, The Human Dartboard, I do amazing
feats with animal traps, meat cleavers, broken glass, glow sticks
and steam irons. I am what is called a 'Torture King' because I do
things with my body that are considered painful and downright crazy.
LargeInCharge.com: What made you get into this line of work?
I have been an
entertainer most of my life and, oddly enough, stumbled into this
realm of show biz somewhat by accident when I discovered my high
pain threshold and my ability and willingness to do acts that other
people consider dangerous or just plain nuts.
LargeInCharge.com: How long have you been performing?
I started
playing music when I was 13 years old and played in rock bands all
through High School. When I got out of school, I continued making
music in various forms, from rock and country music to working the
folk music circuit for 30 years as a dulcimer, banjo and guitar
player. I maintained this as a hobby/sideline for many years until I
started working as a side show act.
LargeInCharge.com: What was your original occupation and what other
things have you done over the years?
I got my first
job, as a cook in a local diner, when I was 14 years old. I have
worked in many fields over my many years. I have driven an ice cream
truck, dug ditches, worked in a warehouse, worked as a welder and
boilermaker and spent over 20 years in the printing business.
LargeInCharge.com: What or who inspired you to get into this type of
entertainment?
I am old enough
to have had the privilege of seeing some of the last traveling side
shows at the state fair when I was a kid. I remember the first time
I saw someone driving a nail into their nose and was fascinated by
the genre my entire life. I started picking up the acts here and
there over the years and used them as party tricks and to win bar
bets. It was when I saw the Jim Rose Circus Side Show when they
opened for Nine Inch Nails in the early 90's that I thought, "I
should be doing that." I started pursuing the acts and learning more
and more. The biggest influence on my act and career came after I
was already a performer when I met my mentor, Melvin Burkhart.
Melvin was the original Himan Blockhead. He created the act around
driving a nail into your nose and was a huge influence on me as a
performer. Melvin could work a room like no one I have met before or
since. He died a few years ago at age 96 and had done a show the day
before having a stroke.
LargeInCharge.com: How long have you been a performing?
I started
playing in bands at around 14 and have been on stage, in one form or
another, ever since. I started performing this particular act in the
mid 90's and have been doing it as my full time job since 2001
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your first performance and how your
act has grown since then?
I had played a
music festival in New Orleans at Mardi Gras and one of the other
musicians and myself (and several others from the festival) went
into the French Quarter on Mardi Gras Day. My friend would go into
bars and tell the bartender that if they would give us beer and
Jagermeister, that he would bring his friend in (me) and I would
drive a nail into my head. No one turned us down all day and we got
ourselves and everyone with us totally liquored up. I was relating
this tale to some guerilla artist friends when I got home and they
suggested that I put a show together with the weird stuff I do and
do a performance art piece at their next art event.
It sounded like a good idea so I recruited a friend to help and
together, we put together about 20 minutes of material. We performed
it at the next art event and the audience went nuts. They thought we
had been performing the act for years and that reaction made me
think that I had stumbled onto something that might be worth
pursuing. My friend stayed with the act for about 6 months and he
left and I went predominately solo. After nearly 10 years as a solo
act, I have recently added a partner to the show. She is Anna
Fiametta and is one of my poly relationships in addition to being
the partner in my act. The show has grown from a 20 minute
"performance art" piece to an act that can run from an hour to an
hour and a half.
LargeInCharge.com: Is your act popular?
I leave
audiences wincing, screaming and laughing all over the country so I
would say it is rather popular.
LargeInCharge.com: Please tell us about some of the details of your
act?
Anna and I do
fire eating and the Electric Girl act. She sits in an 'Electric
Chair' that courses 50,000 volts of electricity through her body and
I light florescent tubes and fiery torches off her skin. I drive
nails into my nose and I nail my tongue to a 2x4. I put my hands in
large animal traps, we dance, barefoot, in broken glass. I have a
dartboard tattooed to my shoulder and we have nightly dart
tournaments, complete with a trophy to the winner. This is a small
portion of the many acts we perform and they are all accompanied by
my comedy ramblings.
LargeInCharge.com: You work with many people can you tell me more
about them and how you came across them, what part do they play in
your act?
I work with many
other acts but my act is primarily self sufficient. Since Anna
joined the show about 6 months ago, she has been the only person I
have literally performed with as a part of the act. She is no mere
'lovely assistant' but a real part of the act. She is learning more
and adding to the show constantly and has been a valuable addition.
LargeInCharge.com: What make your performances different than
others?
When I created
my act, I did so in something of a vacuum. By that I mean that there
were no other acts of the type in my area that I could be influenced
by. I had seen the traveling shows as a kid and had seen the Jim
Rose Circus once. I knew I didn't want to steal Jim's act. He is
good but absolutely not my style so I created my act as something I
would enjoy seeing. I tell stories and interact with the audience.
It has been described as 'stand up comedy punctuated with geek
acts.' I try to make the feats flow from one to the next and let one
story lead into the next. All the side show performers do basically
the same amazing feats or variations of the classics but it is the
presentation, the routines that we put with our version that makes
them unique and no one, to my knowledge, does an act exactly like
mine.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us what is the response you get from your
audience?
Responses range
from raucous laughter to nervous shrieks. My act is like a human
roller coaster ride. It can be fun and scary at the same time.
LargeInCharge.com: How does your size come into play in your
performance?
I work shirtless
but wearing a sequined vest. It is quite obvious that I am a fat guy
so I never try to hide the fact and I do play it up in the
performance. I play the part of the sexiest fat man in the world.
One of the lines I use, that has kind of become a trademark line
since I used it in the Discovery Channel documentary I was in is,
"Is there anything in the whole world any sexier than a half nekkid
fat man with a screwdriver sticking out of his face?" People roll
with it and I have gotten many comments about how refreshing it is
to see a larger person who is so comfortable with their size and who
uses it to their benefit.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you have other people of size who work with
you in your act?
Anna would be
considered a classic BBW. She is curvey and lovely and works her
curves to her advantage and has been a huge hit in the show since
she joined the act.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you collaborate with other acts?
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about some of the press coverage you have
been featured in?
I have been
featured in magazines such as Tattoo Savage and Tattoo Revue. I have
had feature stories in Newspapers and on local TV news stations. I
have done morning television and radio around the country.
LargeInCharge.com: How can people learn about you and possibly hire
you, do you have a manager/agent?
LargeInCharge.com: Are you currently on tour or attending any major
functions in the near future?
Anna and I are
currently in Federal Way, WA performing at a large Halloween event
for a big amusement park. We will be here throughout the month of
October. When this ends, we have a bit of time off before our next
show with Big Mamma D's House of Burlesque in Charlotte, NC
LargeInCharge.com: Would you say this is a form of performance art?
This is
definitely a form of performance art. It is less of an artsy
statement and doesn't try to solve the world's problems but it is
performance art just the same.
LargeInCharge.com: What type of emotions do you want your audience
to experience?
I want the
audience to have fun. I want them to see things they have never seen
in their lives. I want to provide an escape. When they are watching
my act, I want them to get lost in the moment and forget that the
rent is due and the dog has fleas and that they hate their boss and
just have a great time.
LargeInCharge.com: What would you say to other performers who are
trying to make it?
Get out of this
business NOW. It is hard, it is painful and I don't need the
competition. LOL.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you have a good support system from family and
friends?
Yes. I have a
wonderful support system. My birth family loves what I do and my
poly family of choice supports me in many ways. My lovely bride of
31 years, Jeanine, keeps my books. My other poly love, Lynn has been
my web mistress for years and Anna, of course, tours with me and
shares the stage.
LargeInCharge.com: What has been the response you have gotten
others?
Response range from rave reviews to being told that I am Satan
incarnate and responsible for bringing evil into the world.
Seriously on both. Overall, the responses are very positive.
LargeInCharge.com: Have you had any responses from the Plus Size
Community?
I get other plus
size folks telling me that it is nice to see fat folks represented
in such a positive way.
LargeInCharge.com: What are your future goals?
I want to keep
doing what I am doing for as long as I am physically able to do it.
After that, I want to write my memoirs and be an old codger that
tells weird stories to the grandchildren. LOL
LargeInCharge.com: Do you have a website, myspace page? How can the
public find you or communicated with you online?
LargeInCharge.com: Give us one word that you can say best represents
your act?
Mesmerizing
LargeInCharge.com: How much have you evolved as an Performer since
those first days?
My confidence
has grown greatly. I have done things onstage that I never dreamed I
would be able to do, much less get paid for doing. I have been
onstage totally naked, something I would have never, in my wildest
dreams, imagined me doing. And oddly enough, I am totally
comfortable with that. It has given me confidence, not only on
stage, but in my everyday life as well. I have grown much thanks to
SideShow Bennie
LargeInCharge.com: How can the readers at www.largeincharge.com help
support you?
Come see
SideShow Bennie when I am performing in your area. If I am not
performing in your area, find a club or event and demand they book
me.
LargeInCharge.com: Where are you from and what is your current
Location?
I am from the Washington DC area where I was born and raise and
I now reside in Capitol Heights Maryland.
LargeInCharge.com: Can you give us some information about
yourself (Age, Height, Size, Nationality, Marital Status,
Children, etc.)?
I am an 35 year old African American unmarried but dating an
wonderful, fun loving, and spiritual individual, I have 2
awesome boys Demond J. Gleton Jr who is 16 years old and Davon
J. McKenzie who is 14 years of age. I am 5"9 in height, size 20
with curves and loving it.
LargeInCharge.com: Were you a big child, or did you gain weight
later in life?
I believe I was a normal size child just taller than some kids
that were my age but not overweight.
LargeInCharge.com: (If you gained weight later in life) what
caused you to gain weight and how did you feel about it?
I started gaining my weight by giving birth to my two sons. And
if someone ask me would I make the same choice again if I had
the chance to, the answer would be "yes".
LargeInCharge.com: Please tell us about the title you now hold?
The title I hold now is my second title that I have
accomplished. I entered and was crowned as the new Ms. Big
Beautiful Women Pageant on August 31, 2008.
LargeInCharge.com: Were you nervous about entering a Pageant?
To ask was I nervous to enter the pageant, I would say "yes"
because I am just about nervous for any pageant or Fashion show
that I would or have participated in. But this is where my self
assurance comes into play as well as my self determination to
strive always at doing my best no matter how big or small the
task will be.
LargeInCharge.com: What made you decide to enter?
My decision on entering the pageant solely came from wanting to
reach out to other parts of the country in order to enhance my
modeling career as well as meet new and positive individuals
that want the same goal and not tear others down trying to reach
them.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us how did you feel during the Pageant?
During the pageant my thoughts and feelings were all over the
place. I was a bit anxious and excited ready to get the show on
the road.
LargeInCharge.com: What was it like to go out on that stage?
Going out on the stage in front of many strangers for me is an
adrenaline rush because I want the people or judges to know that
I have arrived and I am here to stay to represent the plus size
woman of today. And under no circumstance that I am going to
back down, I am moving on and forward with my head held
extremely high knowing that God always had this plan for me. So
I am taking full advantage of all the bells and whistles.
LargeInCharge.com: What is your Platform and Talent?
For this particular pageant there was no requirement to have a
platform but for the future pageants I may enter my platform is
Children that have been sexual abused.
LargeInCharge.com: What have you done since winning your Title?
For the talent portion of the pageant I chose to do a spiritual
dance off the song entitled "Never Would Have Made It" by Marvin
Sapp.
LargeInCharge.com: Have you had an media exposure?
Since winning my title have made an appearance in Philly with
the Delfonics, did a couple of fashion shows and presented my
crown, and appeared at a public school to show the children that
goals can be achieved. I still have plenty more appearances to
make before my year of reign is up just waiting on my schedule.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you plan to enter anymore Pageants, if so
which ones?
I haven't had too much media exposure but you can find a video
clip and pictures of me on certain websites.
LargeInCharge.com: Did you find it a hard journey to be accepted
for your size?
I definitely want to enter more pageants preferably one each
year. I have been researching American Beauty, Miss Curves
United States, and Miss Plus United States.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you find acceptance among your family and
friends?
I wouldn't say it was a hard journey to be accepted for my size,
I would say it was a courageous one because I had to educate
those that did not understand that everyone could not be the
same size.
LargeInCharge.com: What would you say inspires you most in life?
From the support that I have received from my family and friends
from attending fashion shows, giving monetary funds, offering
positive advise, or just being happy for me shows me that they
are ver accepting of what I am doing and who I am.
I would say my mother Ruby Honesty has inspired me the most
throughout my life, why because first my mother was born with a
hereditary disease in her bones that causes her to walk with a
disability that she not let stop her no matter what. Then my
mother went on to become a Foster Parent for DHS assisting the
upbringing of over 100 children, 3 she adopted along with having
3 biologically. And if this was not enough she still provided
daycare for the neighborhood residents and some family members.
So my mom, Ms. Honesty has definitely inspired me to be a
strong, independent African American woman.
LargeInCharge.com: What is your primary job?
My primary job is a Youth Curriculum Coordinator at a Social
Service program located in a low income building. I offer
services to the children such as after school activities where
they receive help with homework or projects, come and vent about
poverty, drugs and alcohol, family etc. The children are also
offered different workshops to help them make better decisions
that will affect their goals in the future. I try to give them
hope for a better tomorrow.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you find acceptance in the work force?
No matter what job I held I always seem to find acceptance
because they saw my confident level and they way I carried
myself and enjoyed it.
LargeInCharge.com: What changes do you believe should take place
for Large People in the work force?
The changes that should occur for larger individuals in the
workforce would be healthier snacks in vending machines, a 24hr
gym to encourage being healthy, being first to be chosen to
travel or take a particular position and not to be overlooked,
more acceptance from co-workers and less laughing behind the
person's back, and positive and encouraging words which always
seem to help an individual feel better.
LargeInCharge.com: Do you have any experience in the Modeling
Industry?
I have been modeling a little over two years now, I have done
numerous fashion shows, and won two titles so I would say that
qualifies as having experience. But I am definitely always open
to learning and enhancing my modeling skills to better my
career.
LargeInCharge.com: What do you think about the fashion industry
for big sized clothing?
The larger clothes in the fashion industry has come a long way
but still have a lot of kinks that needs to be sorted out. The
designers just needs to know what feels and fit well on a plus
size woman. And the only he or she would know that is by looking
in that woman's face to see if they see a transformation taken
place.
LargeInCharge.com: What did you wear during the Pageant?
For the pageant I wore a 4 piece business suit for the
Introductory scene, a red and gold outfit for lingerie, white
leotard and skirt for the talent portion, and haltered lavender
gown with rhinestone broaches.
LargeInCharge.com: What do you wish to see change with the
fashion industry?
I would like for more designers to take the time out to enhance
the beauty of a plus size women through nice garments made from
incredible materials.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us some of the places you buy your
clothing from.
I shop at many stores such as Ashley Stewart, Torrid, Macy's,
Lane Bryant, Avenue and some internet websites.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us one of your secret beauty tips.
One of my secret beauty tips is never eat before a fashion show
or pageant because it will bloat your stomach and cause cramps.
LargeInCharge.com: Tell us about your goals as far as modeling
and Pageant.
My goals for modeling and pageants is to strive for the gold, to
do my best, never back down and reach as far as I can with God's
grace and mercy.
LargeInCharge.com: Can you tell us about an inspirational moment
in you life that made you feel good about your size.
An inspirational moment where I felt good about my size was when
I traveled to Puerto Plata and went on an excursion where I had
to climb 7 difficult waterfalls where you had to be able to lift
your body weight in order to get to the next level.
LargeInCharge.com: Is there a person in your life that makes you
keep going?
If I had to choose a person in my life that causes me to keep
going I would say my youngest son Davon, he has so much belief
and admiration in what I do that he brags to his friends about
how beautiful his mother is and he is always there to assist me
with whatever I may need.
LargeInCharge.com: What advice would you give to other people of
size who want to enter Pageants?
I would say to other plus size women who want to enter pageants
is to hold your head up high, and believe in yourself that you
can accomplish all your dreams that your heart desires.
LargeInCharge.com: What plus size figure do you admire?
I admire Queen Latifah the most because she has accomplish so
much within her career itself. She is definitely one look up to
and know that anything is possible.
LargeInCharge.com: Describe yourself with one word.
If I would describe myself with one word it would be "Confident"

November 2008 was W Magazine Special Art Edition. Mika
Rottenberg was commissioned to do an Exclusive piece of work for W
Magazine. In this work Mika's unique style of art is seen as a totem
pole of people all working in small quarters and each in extreme
conditions. The individuals are all in themselves an collections of
differences. I was selected to be one of the models for this piece
of work, I was also featured in the behind the scenes video, noted
as the first Squasher to appear in W Magazine. I can say it was a
challenge since I had a knee injury during this time, past the pain
it was still something I enjoyed doing. I found it interesting and
so might you.

Reviews, Interview, News and more from our new writer Super Sized Spanishfly Lynx.
Lynx
Garcia, also known as "SUPERSIZE SPANISHFLY", is a Latina BBW from
Queens NYC. Lynx is an activist speaking out against size
discrimination and began performing back in 1996 at social events
for big beautiful women and big handsome males and their admirers.
Her special mixture of sound held true as she sang, spat, danced and
performed spoken word, soon she was in demand by
Big and Beautiful parties nationwide. Lynx taking her "look"
and sound mainstream was rejected because of her size. She
did not let this break her spirit, hurt her confidence or minimize
her drive. Instead she rose up and started a public access show
(LYNX' LAIR) aired in Queens on TIME WARNER QPTV . Combination of
comedy and sexy style, she showcased underground artists of all
walks of life. The response to her show was PHENOMENAL....in less
than a year she has showcased many artist, some who moved to bigger
and better things.
Currently Lynx has caught the attention of Joey Mekkah of BLACK
SOLARIS ENTERTAINMENT and found herself on the Grandmaster MELLE
MEL's SOLO ALBUM "MUSCLES" featured on the hot latin hip-hop track
called 'DIMELO", she is the only collaboration on the album. Lynx
recently has started her own radio show on EXTRAVAGANGSTARADIO.COM
called Ladies Night. EXTRAVAGANGSTARADIO is #1 on the
itunes network.

The Adventures of Phatgurl
by Emily Suzanne
Smiltneck
The
Adventures Of Phatgurl
is a serial collection of stories about the adventures of Jany, a
plus-sized young woman who, in desperation, places an ad on a
personals website. As she embarks on her dates, she meets many
different kinds of men who expect many different things from her.
Some of her adventures are wildly amusing and others are more
serious and even sad.
If you have any
ideas or experiences, funny or otherwise, that you would like to see
depicted in a future Phatgurl story, please e-mail me at
emilysuzanne20@hotmail.com.
I will do my very best to incorporate all reader ideas into future
columns. Thanks!
The Ad
SWSSBBW seeks SM willing to ask her out. Need
not buy gifts, remember dates, put toilet seat down. Video game
fanatics and men who require guys’ nights out okay. Willing to
watch action movies and avoid “the talk.” Reply to: phatgurl@personalz.com
I just came across your ad a few minutes ago when I was searching
SSBBW stuff on the web. I live in New Mexico and I don’t know you
at all, but I had to let you know that you really don’t sell
yourself well. Too many women seem to feel like you do, that they
aren’t worth much because they’re super sized. I say if you’re
bigger, you’re worth MORE! Remember that, and carry yourself with
pride. Love to see a picture of you and give you my humble opinion,
but as of right now, I strongly believe that you are probably way
too willing to settle and are therefore selling yourself short.
Send me a pic? Look forward to hearing back from you.
Wow. So much encouragement from someone who’s never even met me!
Thanks! You really made my day. And you can write in complete
sentences- most of the guys who respond to me can’t. I am more than
happy to send you a pic. Don’t feel the need to flatter me,
though. I’m really pretty happy with who I am and how I look,
except that it sort of puts the deep freeze on any sort of romance
in my life. You’re right- it’s too bad you live so far away! Hope
you enjoy the pics!
and can I have your phone number? I’d love to talk to you. A big,
beautiful woman who is also intelligent and seemingly sane? Unheard
of!
Jany backed away from her computer and stared at the
screen. Was it worth a response? Bob certainly hadn’t been worth
even a second of her time. But this guy seemed different. More
intelligent, anyway, and infinitely more respectful. And too far
away to meet in person, at least right away. She’d have time to
feel him out. Slowly, she leaned forward and typed her phone
number.
She was in the shower five minutes later when her cell
phone started singing to her. She dropped her shampoo bottle on her
toe and howled in pain as she slid open the door and half fell out
of the shower. Jany wondered to herself when she had started
getting out of the shower to answer phone calls. Her voicemail
could handle them just fine. She knew the answer, though. It was
when guys had started answering her ad. Okay, so Bob was the only
guy who had so far, and he had never called when she was in the
shower, but she knew that his first call had been the turning
point. She would never ignore another call until she was settled
comfortably into dating someone.
The number on her phone’s caller ID was not familiar to
her and the butterflies in her stomach told her it was Searching.
She sat on the edge of the tub and squeezed her knees together to
stop them from shaking.
“Hello?”
“Hi. Is this Jany?”
“Yes it is.”
“This is Michael. From Personalz.com.”
“Oh.”
There was a pause that was, for Jany, anyway,
excruciatingly uncomfortable. Finally, Michael spoke again.
“Did I—is this a bad time?”
“No.”
Again, the silence.
“Uh—how—how are you doing?”
“I’m fine.”
Silence. Jany knew she had to talk, had to start
responding to him, but she somehow couldn’t. It was hard enough to
talk to guys in general, but this guy had two additional strikes
against him: he was intelligent, and he seemed to be interested in
her. His voice left Jany completely tongue-tied.
“Am I bothering you or something?”
“No.” Jany paused while she stood up and rearranged
herself on the toilet. The edge of the bathtub was not the most
comfortable place to sit in the best of circumstances, and most
certainly not when she was trying to sound smooth and cool and like
she talked to attractive, intelligent men every day. At last, she
forced herself to speak again. “I’m sorry. I—I’m not very good at
this. I’m really shy when I first talk to people. I should have
warned you. About that, and that I giggle when I don’t know what
else to say.”
“All right. I can handle that. We’ll take it slow.
What did I pull you away from?”
“Not much. I was in the shower when the phone ra—”
Jany froze. She hadn’t mean to tell him that, hadn’t meant to let
him know she was so desperate for attention that she jumped out of
the shower to answer her phone every time it rang. Or that she was
talking to him while she was sitting naked on the toilet.
Self-consciously, she grabbed a towel from the rack and pulled it
over her, as if he could see her.
“Shy, huh? You don’t sound shy.”
“I am. Shy and nervous, which makes me talk just to
fill in silences and say things I had no intention of saying.
Sorry.”
“I can’t say I mind the visual on that.”
“Oh.” And then came the infamous nervous giggle. Jany
hated her giggle. Her inexperience made her seem young and innocent
enough; she didn’t need the giggle to add to it.
“Really.”
“Um. Yeah. I mean, thanks. Thank you. Look, is that
the right answer? I never know what to say in these situations.
This is kind of ridiculous. I swear to you I’m more intelligent
than I sound.”
“Yes, I know you are. It’s okay, just relax. I’m not
gonna bite you or anything. Even if I wanted to, I’m completely
across the country from you. Any answer you give is the right
answer. It’s not like you’re being tested or anything.”
“Okay. I mean, I know that. It’s just—I’ve never had a
guy to talk to before. Not one that—that was attracted to me. Not
that I think you’re attracted to me, it’s just—you said—never mind.”
“I am attracted to you. I’m old enough to be
your father and I live on the other side of the country, so I can’t
do much about it, but I am. Get used to it, hey?”
Jany giggled again. It was one of the most awkward
phone conversations of her life, but she was enjoying herself,
somehow.
“Well, I just wanted to call you, hear your voice. I
have a meeting I’m expected at in a few minutes. I’ll call you
again tomorrow, okay?”
“Yeah, ok. And Michael? It really was good to talk to
you.”
“You too. Talk to you soon.”
Jany hung up the phone, let the towel she was clutching
to her chest fall, threw back her head, and laughed in glee. He
might not be willing to do anything about it, but Michael seemed to
really like her. When she finished in the shower, Jany went into
her bedroom and sat down at her computer. She was in the middle of
dashing off a quick note to Michael—one she re-wrote about a
thousand times so that it wouldn’t sound like she had spent any time
on it at all—when a new message notification popped up on the bottom
of her screen.
Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to gather
and share time together. It is a good time to reflect on
the past and create memories for the future.
Once
again it the time of year to stuff ourselves silly on
nap inducing turkey.
For this month I wanted to give you some option on using
the left over turkey. For years I would give people
ways to make something different for the Thanksgiving
meal, but eventually it hit me that tradition wins out
over innovation on this holiday. Sometimes you just
have to give in and go with the crowd so I started
focusing on what to do with the turkey after you had
enough turkey fritters and turkey sandwiches. Try these
slight interesting twists on your Turk-ified
meals.
Thanksgiving is our season of sweet and blessed
memories. What more could you need from a holiday. In
this time of year we are told to focus on things to be
thankful. Such things like health, home, and family
never seem to hit us the right way when we’re kids or
teenagers, but eventually we see the value in it. Just
like how we hated to go to family reunions when we were
kids and finally became the ones to organize the whole
thing.
I urge each of you to hang on to these traditions. The
greatest part of any society and community is the
closeness and care in which we hold the people around
us. Sadly, with life at the speed of light, this
tradition is dying as is a big part of America. The
valuing and respect of the past, provides us the courage
and guidance for the future. These successes can only
be achieved through a united family, which leads to a
united community, which leads to a united state, which
leads to a United States of America. Our future is held
together by traditions. Stay in contact with your
family, talk to the elders, listen and learn, and heed
the knowledge they have.
The first Thanksgiving was nearly four hundred years
ago. Since that time, Thanksgiving has been kept by the
people of our nation as the great family festival of the
year. At this time children and grandchildren return to
the old home, the long table is spread, and brothers and
sisters, who had been separated, again seat themselves
side by side. It is a sacred time of tradition spirit
and love.
I thank you all for allowing me to spend this time with
you.
May God Bless You All

Turkeys are able to adapt to a wide variety of habitats.
However, most turkeys are found in hardwood forests with
grassy areas.
The best time to see a turkey is on a warm clear day or
in a light rain.
Turkeys have heart attacks. When the Air Force was
conducting test runs and breaking the sound barrier,
fields of turkeys would drop dead.
Turkeys can drown if they look up when it is raining.
Turkeys spend the night in trees. They fly to their
roosts around sunset.
Turkeys fly to the ground at first light and feed until
mid-morning. Feeding resumes in mid-afternoon.
Gobbling starts before sunrise and can continue through
most of the morning.
A wild turkey has excellent vision and hearing. Their
field of vision is about 270 degrees. This is the main
reason they continue to elude some hunters.
A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per
hour. They can also burst into flight approaching speeds
between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.
Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be a
turkey.

Thanksgiving Poem
Will and Guy have been sent this poem which reflects the
positive spirit of Thanksgiving:
I am thankful
For the wife Who says it's hot dogs
tonight
Because she is home with me
And not out with someone else.
For the husband Who is on the sofa
Being a couch potato
Because he is home with me
And not out at the bars.
For the teenager
Who is complaining about doing dishes
Because it means she is at home,
Not on the streets.
For the taxes I pay Because it means
I am employed.
For the mess to clean after a party Because it means I have
Been surrounded by friends
For the clothes that fit a little too snug Because it means
I have enough to eat.
For my shadow that watches me work Because it means
I am out in the sunshine.
For a lawn that needs mowing,
Windows that need cleaning,
And gutters that need fixing
Because it means I have a home.
For all the complaining
I hear about the government Because it means
We have freedom of speech.
For the parking spot
I find at the far end of the parking lot
Because it means
I am capable of walking,
And I have been blessed with transportation.
For my huge heating bill Because it means
I am warm.
For the lady behind me in church Who sings off key
Because it means I can hear.
For the pile of laundry and ironing Because it means
I have clothes to wear.
For weariness and aching muscles At the end of the day
Because it means I have been
Capable of working.
For the alarm that goes off In the early morning hours
Because it means
I am alive.
And finally, for too much e-mail Because it means
I have friend who is thinking of me.

Cher was born in Los
Angeles California in 1955. Being adopted by wonderful parents she
grew up in the city of Encino, and was always surrounded by loving
caring family and friends. Growing up with a thin mother, who was
always trying to get Cher to lose weight, diets of all types,
sending her to fat camp, bribing her, and
not ever having sweets in their home.
Growing up Cher never was lacking in friends and boyfriends who
loved her personality and her kindness.
Guys in her life always were saying your so pretty but why don't you
lose some weight. This she heard all of her life but her weight just
would go up and down.
Cher has always loved seeing others happy and helping others to find
their inner self and beauty.
Ten years ago, she found the plus size community and she knew this
is where she would focus on helping others who were like her and had
some of her experiences and pain that she went through.
Cher has been in the community working with others for size
acceptance. She was seen on "Dr.Phil, "Good Morning
America","Entertainment Tonight", "Russian, British, Japanese,and
Viet Vietnamese Television". Also a documentary filmed at the Las
Vegas Bash on the Travel channel, and Current TV, a online station,
with numerous radio interviews talking about size acceptance.
She was a promoter for the number one BBW hip hop club in
California, and seeing people come into the club and make new
friends and feel good about themselves warmed her heart.
Her love for helping others to feel better about themselves and to
help mainstream accept the plus size community is her focus and
goal. She is Vice President of "Hollywood Cure For Pain" a celebrity
movement to help those who suffer in chronic pain. She is now
showing mainstream that "Big Girls can rock the Red Carpet"! Besides
being a wife, mother and activist, playing with her Chocolate Lab
Ruby is what she loves best!

Where are they Now?

Stephanie Baham
Where are they now?
What has happened to some of our beloved plus size entertainers of
back-in-the-day television? Well let’s find out shall we? Here are a
few updates on some of my favorites:
Heavy D: Born Dwight Errington Myers, Heavy D became a hip-hop star
in the late 80s with songs such as “Overweight Lovers in the House”
and “Is It Good For You.” Since then he’s starred in TV shows such
as Living Single, Boston Public and The Tracy Morgan Show. Dwight
has also recorded songs for many TV & movie soundtracks. His latest
appearances have been in 3 episodes of the action-drama series
“Bones”.
Mindy Cohn: You take the good, you take the bad, you take em’ both &
there ya have…the Facts Of Life! Yes you remember Mindy, she played
the loveable plus sixe teenager, Natalie. She always had a jovial
disposition and was best friend to Tootie, the roller skating
schoolgirl. She appeared in the Facts Of Life from 1979-1988. After
the show, she made random appearances on television.
Around 2003 she joined the world of animation…lending her voice to
such cartoons as Kim Possible and Scooby-Doo. Her latest work
includes lending her voice to the wildly popular Family Guy.
Wendie Jo Sperber: Remember Wendy Jo? She gained stardom by playing
Amy on Bosom Buddies opposite Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari from
1980-1982. Since then, she’s appeared on dozens of TV shows such as
Who’s The Boss, Married With Children, Murphy Brown and Touched By
An Angel. Her most recent work includes appearing in 4 episodes of 8
Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter and lending her voice to
2 episodes of the animated show American Dad.
Delta Burke: Delta gained stardom by playing Suzanne Sugarbaker on
the hit series Designing Women from 1986-1991. Since designing with
the women, Delta has appeared in many TV shows such as Touched By An
Angel and Popular. Delta also started a line of plus size lingerie.
Her latest work in TV includes appearances in 5 episodes of Boston
Legal opposite William Shatner & James Spader. Delta is currently
working on a new TV series due to be released in 2009 called
Southern Baptist Sissies, which chronicles the days in the lives of
4 gay men living in a southern Baptist community.
I scanned lists of TV shows from the 70s, 80s and 90s and didn’t
find too many plus sized actors in major roles. That didn’t surprise
me….as the size acceptance movement didn’t have the momentum it did
today. Now we have plus size entertainers in lead roles on both TV
and film…and we’ve got the large & lovely ladies walking the fashion
runway during Milan’s fashion week. We’ve come a long way, baby!
I am a former plus-size model and stage performer. I have written
articles that have appeared in local newspapers, college magazines
and I was a sports editor for my school newspaper. Currently I have
a book coming out in May 08, How to Make a Living Without a Job: the
Guide to Professional Temping. It will be available online through
Amazon and can be ordered through Barnes & Noble or Borders. I split
my time between the Bay Area, CA and Houston, TX.
Miss England's First Plus-Sized
Finalist with
Iolande Argent
America may have its own version of “Plus-size” pageants; but they
are independent of the mainstream Miss America and Miss USA and it’s
not likely they’ll be having plus-size entrants grace those stages
anytime soon. But the same can’t be said across the pond in the
United Kingdom.
If you haven’t heard, the latest stir in the UK is over Miss England
Finalist Chloe Marshall. She's is the largest model ever to vie the
coveted Miss England crown.
Chloe is a statuesque 5’10” beauty sporting a DD cup and tips the
scales at 176 pounds. Her figure is not only flattering it’s
something that hasn’t been spotted (let alone complimented as being
beautiful) in over 3 decades. She is symbolic of what real women and
glamour queens of the 40s, 50s and 60s embodied; gorgeous healthy
curves, a smile that lights up the room, and come-hither eyes.
Ah, that takes you back to shades of the sexy size 14/16 Marilyn
Monroe, the sultry svelte size 16 of Jane Russell or even the
dynamic diva Ms. Lena Horne at a size 12. All of these women were
stylish, curvy and they flaunted it with pride and reverence. And
that’s what Miss Chloe has and is doing.
According to her agent, Model Plus's Stevie Walters, Chloe's success
has less to do with her size than with her personality. "She is
extremely confident," says Walters. "What's great is that Chloe's a
very good ambassador for teenagers who otherwise feel that fashion
is dictating to them."
"I think this is happening now because people are sick and tired of
skinny models," says Walters. "Women aren't that size. So bigger,
plus-size girls are coming into the spotlight."
The England Pageant deserves recognition for its stand on what is
“TRULY” representative of the women in today’s world. The Miss
England pageant is a welcoming platform for plus-size girls because
the winner is chosen in part by the public.
"We don't deal with catwalk models, and we always encourage them to
eat correctly and not to lose weight," Angie Beasley, Miss England
Pageant Director, tells ABC News. "They are judged also on
personality, confidence, beauty, and they also have to be
photogenic."
"And Chloe won because of the way she spoke about her cause, as well
as the way she photographs," Beasley states.
"They have to be good spokeswomen for what they believe in," says
Beasley. Most important of all, the contestants must have a cause.
And Chloe Marshall's cause of bringing beauty back to big girls,
rings truer with the crowds, than, the over-used fallback of, “world
peace” routine that you hear all pageant finalist spout off about.
And spokeswoman is what Chloe Marshall is turning out to be. She’s
already held her own in TV appearances and indulged in a
confrontational debate on body image that was televised in the UK.
Miss Marshall is showing that she’s got the right stuff and she’s
not afraid to use it.
Chloe wants to pursue a career as a plus-size model. And if you
don’t think she’s got what it takes just check out some of her
photos.
Justin Timberlake may be bringing ‘sexy back’; but Miss Chloe
Marshall is taking it to a whole other level and bringing real women
as sexy back.

Fat is a Four-letter Word
Written By: Ursula
Singleton
Fat is a Four-letter
Word
I am convinced that
fat should be a
four-letter word.
While it is simply an
adjective, these three
letters together steal
confidence, invoke
shame, and perpetuate
self-loathing.
Fat is one of those
words that you just
shouldn't use. You know
what I mean. It should
be one of those bad
words that you would get
in trouble for using
when you were a child.
Fat can be defined as
being substantial and
impressive. That is how
I choose to see myself.
I have a few (okay more
than a few) extra
pounds. So what! I am
not FAT. I am fabulous,
articulate, talented.
I can be your friend,
your advocate, your
teacher.
But you don't see me.
You look and see only
fat. Fat somehow gives
me the power of
invisibility. Open your
eyes. Perhaps you will
see the big, beautiful
woman I am.

Ask Raqui
Q:
How can someone be a guest on your radio show?
Niner
Raqui: First
someone has to be able to offer some type of service, or
expertise that caters to the Plus Sized Community. If
there is a company or person who believes they have
something to offer the LargeInCharge Audience they can
E-mail me @ radio@largeincharge.com
Q:
I have a problem estimating my
size when ordering clothes. I know I don't fit
most clothes in the stores. What should I do about
ordering from catalogs?
Marcie
Raqui:
This was the same
reason why I didn't order clothing from companies some
years ago. First check about the return policy for
whatever website you want to order from. Many will
take returns at no cost or will charge you a flat rate
of $5.95 to return. Some you will have to
pull money out of your pocket to return the item and if
you are returning many things it might be costly.
I would start with a company that lets you return for
free or a flat rate no matter how much you return.
To judge how a certain companies clothes fit get the
clothing in 3 sizes. Many times according to the
measurements the item doesn't seem like it would fit me
but then when I get the item it does. Always get 3
sizes and see which fits you best, and return the rest.
Remember clothes that are not stretchy will fit
different than those that do.
If you want a little help you can email me personally
and I will try to judge by your picture around what size
you are from my knowledge, that will give you a good
start. E-mail me at
Raqui@largeincharge.com
Q:
What ever happened to
the Adult Show?
Jamey
Raqui: I am
still working on finding a place to host my adult show
where it will not be pulled down. I would rather host on
my website so that I don't have to worry about
censorship. My Friday Night Show is still going
though.

We all hate how the Fashion Industry is just scratching the
surface when it comes to Large Sized Fashion. But I have
found out that many clothing stores and online companies are
beginning to take up the slack. Creative BBW, SSBBW and
BHM's are making there own clothing or mix matching and finding
basic everyday wear and night club wear.
Making it affordable is what can be hard so showcase your
wonderful finds here. If your a regular shopper, sew your
own clothing or a designer showcase your clothing here by

Why I Like this Item: This top goes up to a size
5X, what I like the most is that you can dress it up or
down easily. This style will look good on those with a
