Raqui-ism - Food for the Needy during Hard Times

Written By: Raqui

This year not only is LargeInCharge begining our 10th year but I will be starting my own little quest toward learning, giving, and expanding my own mind by donating to a new charity every month.  I hope that you all will enjoy learning about these new charities with me.   I began to understand that most of us only donate to a charity if we have an emotional connection to the charity itself or someone who is trying to raise money for a cause.   One day when I happen to dismiss a charity that was asking for donations I realized I dont want to be that person.  I want to give because the cause is worthy and I can.  Not only because of an emotional connection.   So join me in learning about new causes and charities this year.  I will post a new one to my column every month.

CHARITY OF THE MONTH:  Juanita Kelly Foundation & Jolin Food Box Program

Juanita Kelly (founder of Goddess Magazine) came up with a great idea and Join with the Jolin Food Box Program.  This month I decided to donate so that a Needy Family recieves some much needed food.

The economy is still down, but food prices are going up. To beat this economic recession, we are pleased to present the Jolin Food Box outreach program to help budget conscious families.

This program is designed to provide families with nationally branded food products at wholesale prices. The products in this food box include a balanced variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner items prepackaged in our temperature controlled warehouse. We are offering these boxes at wholesale prices thus enabling folks to save money without compromising quality of life.

If you are in the New Jersey area you can purchase a food box for $38.00.  When you donate $38.00 a needy family will recieve a food box that contains $100.00 worth of quality food.  Last Month the Juanita Kelly Foundation was able to give 500 food boxes away to needy families in the New Jersey area.

Want to Donate? email Junaita directly at JuanitaKellyFoundation@gmail.com

Angie BEE grew-up a standard-sized young woman, educated in communications, promotions and planning.  She became a wife, mother and ministry support member while building businesses and her faith.

Through stress, age and a poor diet and while suffering from major depression and attempted suicide, Angie BEE's weight climbed from 180 pounds to 360 pounds.  She was diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, an overactive bladder and poor leg circulation.  At the age of 40 an anxiety attack and the decline in her mental health forced her to stop work and look at improving her declining health.  It was during this time that Angie BEE became inspired by her younger sister Sonya Bennett during her process towards Gastric Bypass Surgery.  Sonya launched this column and will return occasionally to contribute to it, but now that she is three years-post surgery... her life is focused on something new!

Now, celebrating her first year of a new life since having the procedure herself, Angie BEE is healthier than she has been in over a decade.  Losing the first 100 pounds was just the bonus!  She is now diabetes-free.  She has normal blood pressure.  The circulation in her legs is normal.  She sleeps without a c-pap machine and more!  The joy that she feels is documented each day in her syndicated radio show, a brand new weekly  TV show documentary and each month in this article.  The Big GB stands for The BIG Gastric Bypass and it also stands for "Getting (my life) Back".  This article reflects how Angie BEE's life has improved... by the grace of God and as the result of having Gastric Bypass surgery on Feb 28, 2011.  This is now her life!

That Dress makes you look Fat!

with Angie Bee

There was once a time in my life when a statement would have hurt my feelings.  I mean, I can’t be THAT fat, RIGHT?!  Tonight my dear friend said that to me and it actually made me smile!  HA!  I AM FAT and I LOVE MY CURVES!

On February 11th, I celebrate my two-year anniversary after having weight loss surgery.  I still remember when surgeon Keith Kim came in to see me moments before they wheeled me down the hall to the surgery suite and said to me “Gastric Bypass is a tool that can change your life, but you have to use it as just ONE of your tools.  Maintain the lifestyle that we taught you in class and support group and you will be fine”.  Thank GOD for that man and this process and yes, I AM FINE!

Tonight I am at the ULTIMATE Christian Nightclub party in Tampa, Florida and am having a GREAT time!  I am in CHARGE of my atmosphere and I KNOW I am feeling fine!  (I look pretty good, too!).  Ryte Flight Entertainment invited me to come out and bring our Tour artists and I rolled in with G-Rane & Lady G (from the Tour) rolling deep with Mama Rita (“Hope 4 The Hood Ministries”) and it has certainly been an experience.  My first nightclub appearance since the weight loss began and I was actually dancing in the corner!  Can you believe it? (LOL)

Now, at the Christian nightclub, they have non-alcoholic smoothies, pizza, candy, popcorn and all sorts of yummy stuff that I should avoid.  I’m still losing about four to five pounds a month – which is why they advise not having any ‘after-surgery work’ such as a tummy tuck for two years after your surgery -- and I don’t want to stop that train from rolling so I avoided the smoothies and split a slice of pizza with my friend.  I resisted the chocolate (so proud of me) and kept my water and Powerade bottles near me.  I get enough sugar from the Powerade, so I didn’t need the smoothie.  The cool thing was that I was happy with what I had and I didn’t feel deprived at all.  Two years after surgery and I still feel like I am IN CHARGE!

The bottom line is that I have lost 185 since February 11, 2011 and I don’t regret a moment of my life now; not one moment.  Our Holy Hip Hop tour is still evangelizing through concerts and outreach efforts and I get to travel with them.  Last month I launched the Moms-n-Ministry workshop in Winter Park, Florida and now that ministry will begin to travel.  I have speaking engagements and book signings coming up and I’m so glad to have the energy to do them.  There is the radio syndicated Holy Hip Hop radio show, the brand new TV show and even a team lifestyle magazine!  Oh my GOD -- thank you!  I couldn’t have physically kept this pace weighing 387 pounds.  I couldn’t have kept this pace with obstructive sleep apnea, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes and the overactive bladder and major depression kept me in the house and the anxiety attacks even had me locked inside.  I’m not saying that the weight led to those health problems, but since I don’t have the weight to carry around now I am strong enough to carry the ministry that God has placed in my lap.  It’s a large responsibility and I am loving it!  This dress may make me look fat, but I’m fat in God’s Kingdom and I’m honored to be a Queen in His service!  Amen

Founded in 1969, NAAFA is a non-profit civil rights organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for fat people. NAAFA works to eliminate discrimination based on body size and provide fat people with the tools for self-empowerment through public education, advocacy, and member support.

This Column is dedicated to the tremendous work NAAFA has been doing for over four decades.  LargeInCharge wishes to support NAAFA in spreading the word of its work, and give the public more information into issues we as plus sized people should be aware of.  The fight for equality for people of all sizes is one we support.

The Biggest Loser Promotes the Bullying Cycle

from: NAAFA.org

The Biggest Loser Promotes the Bullying Cycle

NAAFA strongly condemns the upcoming season 14 of The Biggest Loser, which will include teenagers. The Biggest Loser, well known for its abusive tactics, should not be allowed to profit off the bullying and stigmatization of fat kids. That this series would be developed despite the evidence of the harm done to children by focusing on body size and weight loss is unconscionable.   There is no doubt that the promotion of a healthy, long-term lifestyle is not the primary purpose of this television show, but rather to grab ratings and profits for the network and its producers.

"I am concerned that The Biggest Loser promotes short-term weight loss and does long-term harm to the bodies, minds, and spirits of many of its contestants and viewers--precipitating eating disorders, weight gain, depression, and weight-based bullying. That they are now involving teenagers is appalling," states Dr. Barbara Altman Bruno, Ph.D., LCSW, author and NAAFA Advisory Board member.

Numerous studies have addressed the issue of focusing on children’s weight and body size.  These studies include results that indicate:

Fewer calories are consumed by overweight and obese children than by average weight counterparts... beginning at around seven years of age according to a 2012 study of caloric intake in a large, nationwide population of children and adolescents. (Skinner, Steiner and Perrin, Sept. 2012)

Greater weight gain occurs among young people engaged in weight-control practices regardless of baseline weight, than that of adolescents who do not engage in such practices (Neumark-Sztainer et al., 2006).

The more weight per se is talked about; the more likely teens are to adopt dangerous dieting behaviors. The focus needs to be on health much more than weight, based on results from a population-based, longitudinal study with 2,500 teens conducted at the University of Minnesota.  (Newmark-Sztainer et al., 2006)

Media and cultural obsession with weight loss actually undermine motivation to adopt healthy lifestyle habits according to a study from UCLA.  (Yancey et al., 2006)

We need to create environments in which children and adolescents do not feel shame or guilt about their bodies but are instead motivated to enjoy healthful eating and active living habits regardless of their body size or shape.

This television show will add to the already pervasive bias against fat children, and it is logical that bias begets discrimination.  NAAFA opposes discrimination in any form.  Discrimination is wrong and must stop now!

Visit the NAAFA website at www.naafa.org to view the NAAFA Child Advocacy Toolkit from our homepage.  This groundbreaking toolkit shifts the focus from the war on childhood obesity to a health-centered focus embracing children of all sizes. Even more importantly, it demonstrates how to design programs and approaches that will improve the total health of all our children.

NAAFA encourages all concerned parties to contact the following people to express your concern about the damage that will be done by this offensive television series:

It’s February and we are vastly approaching Valentine’s Day and that means the pressure is on to find the perfect restaurant at the right price without over spending your budget and breaking the bank for a romantic dinner for two.

There’s a better way and that is to plan your own Romantic dinner for two from your own kitchen dinner, dessert, and non-expensive   champagne all without pushing the tilt button.

Simple recipes that both you and your mate can enjoy together that’s only if he or she enjoys being in the kitchen.

Follow your passion & release your Potential

with Ms Suga

What makes your heart race? It's a simple question don't you think? What excites you and gets your blood racing? What is the one thing you simply cannot live with out? If you can answer my first question before reaching this point then congratulations! You have found your true passion. If you still don't know the answer that's ok too, that just means you have not reached the point where this information is necessary. We all have our specific journeys to take in life, each with its own timeline, road blocks and soundtrack.

So back to the initial question...What makes your heart race?? Cars? Music? Working out? Food? I'm 90% certain you all can figure out my true passion. If not I'll share in due time. You're probably asking why am I probing your thoughts but like always there's a method to my madness.

Everyday we encounter people (some loved ones and some acquaintances) that are absolutely miserable. They walk around sulking and spewing negativity because they hate their jobs, their lives, and the people that surround them. You know exactly who I'm talking about! That homeboy of yours who hates his job with a passion, he comes in late, sneaks out early always telling his manager what he is and is not going to do, complains even when given a raise but has worked the same job for the past 20 years and refuses to find another job. Or that girlfriend of yours who is a self proclaimed master chef and if you didn't know her you would swear she trained in the finest culinary schools in Europe but she refuses to boil rice for pot luck. Yep my dear we are surrounded by Negative Nancy's & Nathan's and there isn't much we can do about that. As I've stated many times before, one cannot change someone who doesn't want or isn't ready to change.

But what you can do is prevent yourself from being that Negative Nancy/Nathan (Ok if there is anyone reading this who's name is either Nathan or Nancy note this is not a direct insult on you personally. I just need an N and those were the first to that came to mind.) Anywho, I used to be that person. I was miserable with all the choices I made in life and the one thing I enjoyed to most was the one thing I refused to do. Writing has always been a passion of mine, I practiced it, went to college for it but I allowed other people to push me away from it. Now I can say the one thing that drives me more than writing is actually helping others. As you should know by now I live to share what has worked for me in hope that it will work for someone else. That's truly what "Words from the B.I.G." is all about. Helping others along with perfecting my writing and editorial skills (I know the editing my need some help). But I digress.

Hmmmm...Lets see the best way I can explain it is FOLLOW YOUR PASSION AND RELEASE YOUR POTENTIAL. It's two simple concepts that can rock you to your core. 1) Follow your passion. The happiest people in this world are those who are doing what makes them happy. When your work is doing what you love it's no longer work. Plus another immediate benefit: getting paid for doing something you enjoy doing. 2) Release your potential. Everyone has the potential to be great at something. You just have to find your passion and the potential can be manifested into greatness.

Just think Michael Jackson had the potential to be a successful singer. That potential (or in other words talent) plus his passion for music made him one of the greatest singers and performers of all time. Get it? Follow your passion, release your potential and work hard to become the best YOU you can be! Now don't get caught up in MJ's greatness that was his destiny it may not be yours. All I can do is suggest you be the best you can be. Nothing more and nothing less. As always I hope my words encourage you to do something. And as always I hope not only do you benefit from this but that you also pay it forward.

Single for Valentines Day?

 with Kathy Hernandez

This isn't going to be your normal article on what to do on Valentine's Day.  If you are single and some of what I am going to say isn't going to make everybody happy or even agree with me but here goes. Valentine's Day shouldn't be a gloom and doom day because you aren't married, engaged or dating someone. I have seen so many of my friends get depressed because they aren't in a relationship on Valentine's Day, or have a date on Valentine's Day. You shouldn't define yourself or your personal worth based on whether you are in a relationship or not, but many people do that all the time.

I have some friends who are constantly complaining, that they don't have a good man or woman in their lives.  Yet these same friends, aren't showing people that they are looking for a committed relationship. These friends are complaining that they slept with a guy or girl on the first date, and can't figure out why they weren't asked out on a second date. These same friends are also out partying, many days of the week and have DUI's on their driving record.  If you don't know them well, and only see the partying and promiscuity, then how will anyone see, that what they really want in the future is a family and kids?

We always tell people looking for a job, or trying to advance their career, to act and dress for the position. How about acting and dressing as the part of a girlfriend or wife, so the men you date, can see you in their future as their wife and mother of their children? If you are single, and you don't want to be single, than start thinking of what is in the way of you starting the relationship that you want.

Can you look in the mirror and say I am a good person and I love myself? What attributes do you have that will make someone want to be with you, fall in love with you, and spend the rest of their lives with you? When you are happy with yourself, and ready to be in a relationship, then it will happen.  You need to make sure you are compatible, with the person that you are physically attracted to, in order to have a happy relationship.

If you are single on Valentine's Day make sure to go out, and treat yourself to something that you love, whether it's a dinner out, movies, spa day or taking a class. I've been single on many a Valentine's Day,  I always chose to have a date with either my son, or my friends, and we have always had a fantastic time. You can choose to be sad and depressed on Valentine's Day, or you can plan a fun day with your family or friends and have a wonderful day. I hope you choose to have a great time, and celebrate your life because being single isn't something to be sad or depressed about. Give yourself a hug and have a great day on February 14th because you deserve it!

Celebrating almost 2 decades as a Graphic Designer/Published Illustrator, Jean Nerestant Jr (Jness) got his start as a graphic artist in 1994, Still working as a graphic designer by day/ Jness devotes time to his hip hop Culture, comic book art and Plus size/BBW Art.

Big Action

with Jness

Ok, I need you to come along with me on this trip in my imagination, and ultimately all of my artwork ushers you in to do the same thing. That’s the fun part, I take the time and put the work in and you get to sit back and go with me for the journey. Now don’t get me wrong I am not complaining it’s a well-balanced relationship between artist and art appreciator. I look forward to it every time I unveil a new artwork, I get very excited in anticipation of my audiences’ review. It’s very important to me, that’s why I fell in love with social media. It’s such a rush for an artist to create something and get an instant response by way of “like” or even better an actual comment. It’s the perfect scenario for harmonious good times.

Now on to the matter at hand, close your eyes and follow this concept, let yourself imagine with me. This month’s illustration is called, “Big Action”, it features plus size action heroes. I know Hollywood is a long way from actually bringing a production that features a cast of full figured ladies as the stars of an action thriller. But it’s not that far from becoming a reality. Imagine an action movie featuring a cast of actresses like Queen Latifah, Camryn Manheim, Mo’Nique, Rosie O’Donnell, Gabourey Sidibe, Tamela Mann, and Jill Scott. There would even be a cameo appearance by my favorite Fashion blogger, “The Curvy Fashionista”, Marie Denee. All background art in various scenes would boldly display art created by artists like Les Toil, Ruben Esq., Michael Macauley and JNESS. All the actresses’ make-up transformations orchestrated by the hands of Constanza Nordenflycht-Prado, the expert make-up artist from Las Vegas. Maybe Tyler Perry will read this article and decide it’s time to give it a shot.

Hollywood studios are always ready and willing to generate another movie featuring a talented male actor wearing the latest in costume make-up technology, in order to play the roll of a plus sized woman. I’m sure we have all seen the efforts made by Robin Williams (Mrs. Doubtfire), John Travolta (Hairspray), Eddie Murphy (Norbit) and Martin Lawrence (Big Momma’s House) just to name a few. And of course adding insult to injury it’s usually in the name of comedy. I am sure there are a lot of talented plus size actresses out there who are capable of delivery great performances in rolls that dare to extend beyond the stereotypes attached to their appearances. As a graphic designer I have had the privilege to meet authors who write stories that include lead characters that are people of size while presenting them from the real perspective, in the spirit of great content rather than punch line driven plots.

I just thought it would be nice to start the discussion. This illustration is not a plug supporting the use of firearms, consider it another ripple in the media ocean generating new ideas and new vehicle for thinking outside of a very small box.

Hello there all my fashion loving friends. My name is Amy Lucas and in this column I hope to bring you some new outfits that will make you feel great and be Large and In Charge. My whole life has not been devoted to fashion as my background is in teaching Spanish, Math, and Science. I also have a master’s degree in Central Office Administration.

With that said, I have been wearing plus sizes for as long as I can remember so I do know the struggles we all face to find cute clothes. I come from a smaller town in Michigan, which means I have an even harder time finding plus size clothing in my area since the choices are so limited; as well as, the sizes and styles each store carries.

Out of necessity, I started looking online instead of just settling for the places here and have found that other women could use the help too. I run a fashion group on Facebook called BBW Fashion where I post something fabulous each day hoping to help all those to find what they want in their size.

In my career, I've helped plus size students and their parents to find fashion in their sizes that would help them with their self-esteem and make them feel good about themselves. I have also dabbled in fashion before this modeling for three different stores, winning a cover model spot in July of 2012 in Large in Charge magazine, and I was Ms. LBC 2008 for Linda's Big Connections in Chicago. I look forward to showing you what is available in plus size fashion and help you to look even more beautiful and chic.
